What does Painting Your Way Mean?

Painting Your Way is a miniature painting and hobby blog focused on the full creative process behind the projects, not just the finished result. Through miniatures, Blood Bowl teams, display pieces, and Gunpla builds, the blog explores experimentation, technique, successes, mistakes, and everything learned along the way. From traditional painting approaches to more experimental ideas like object source lighting and texture work, the goal is to document the journey of improving one project at a time while making the often solitary side of the hobby feel more social and collaborative. Rather than chasing a single “correct” style, Painting Your Way is about finding an approach that works for you and enjoying the hobby in your own way.

Why do I paint?

For me, painting is more than just a hobby, it's a way to switch off from the rest of the world.

After spending the day sitting behind a desk, painting gives me a chance to step away from work and let my creative side take over. It gives me something to focus on, whether I'm carefully working on a tiny detail, experimenting with a new technique, or simply enjoying the process of bringing a model to life.

Painting also gives me a chance to forget about the worries and stresses of everyday life for a while. When I'm sitting at the desk with a miniature in front of me, everything else can take a back seat. It's a time to slow down, concentrate and enjoy creating something with my own hands.

Where did it all begin?

My miniature painting journey began way back in Year 5.

For a school project, we had to create our own board game. I decided to make something that was essentially chess meets Warhammer, long before I knew anything like that already existed. I had walked past my local Games Workshop store and knew the miniatures were exactly what I needed to bring the battles in my imagination to life.

My dad bought me a box of Beastmen and Empire Militia, which we painted brown and red respectively. Not long after, I discovered the Lord of the Rings miniatures and bought the Balin's Tomb starter set. I didn't paint much after that, but I built the models and spent plenty of time playing with my brother.

Eventually, I drifted away from the hobby. Years later, I found those old models again and started painting once more, dipping in and out of the hobby for a while.

Then, about four years ago, I decided that this was the hobby for me. Since then, I've never looked back.

What do I paint?

My miniature painting journey has taken me through a wide range of games, models and styles over the years.

I currently have a couple of Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game armies in various stages of completion, including Moria Goblins, Moria Dwarves, Isengard and The Fellowship. I also have a Skaven and Chaos Dwarf Blood Bowl team, along with a Savage Malifaux crew.

More recently, I've started branching out from traditional tabletop miniatures and have become increasingly interested in 3D-printed miniatures. I love the freedom they offer and the huge variety of models available to paint.

One of my favourite things to paint is dinosaurs, but my newest passion is Gunpla and mechs. There's something incredibly satisfying about building, modifying and painting these larger, more mechanical models.
